Is your business ready for the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) Closure?

As the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) approaches its closure, thousands of energy meters across the UK will be affected. Read on to understand how the RTS closure may impact your business and the necessary steps to take before the deadline.
What is an RTS Meter?
Introduced in the 1980s, the RTS uses a radio signal to instruct certain electricity meters to switch between peak and off-peak rates.
Primarily used for traditional multi-rate meters, RTS was designed to support households and businesses that rely on electricity for heating and hot water. This includes systems like electric storage heaters, panel heaters, or immersion heaters that typically charge overnight.
As RTS reaches the end of its operational life, the technology responsible for producing the radio signal is no longer maintainable. This means that the service will soon be discontinued, affecting many businesses and households.
When is the RTS Closing?
The Radio Teleswitch Service phase-out was originally planned for March 2024, but Ofgem has now confirmed that RTS will be switched off from 30 June 2025. This change is industry-wide and will impact both domestic and business customers who rely on RTS meters.
After this date, energy suppliers will no longer be able to support RTS meters, as their functionality will be disrupted. However, all energy suppliers are committed to ensuring that customers can continue using their heating and hot water as usual after the transition.
How to Identify an RTS Meter?
If your electricity meter alternates between peak and off-peak tariff rates (e.g., Economy 7 or 10), or if it’s programmed to automatically control heating and hot water, you may be using an RTS meter.
Additionally, RTS meters are often identified by a separate switch box located next to the meter, which is clearly marked with a "Radio Teleswitch Service" label. If you're unsure whether your meter relies on RTS, check for this label or contact your supplier for confirmation.
What to Do if You Have an RTS Meter?
Ofgem have confirmed that all energy suppliers have committed to replacing RTS meters at no additional cost. In most cases, your RTS meter will be exchanged for a smart meter, which offers a number of benefits for businesses, including:
• Automatic meter readings, eliminating the need for estimated billing
• Enhanced energy management through real-time data access
• Greater control over energy usage with detailed consumption insights
Your energy supplier should contact you to arrange the meter upgrade, but if you haven’t heard from them yet, it’s advisable to get in touch with them directly. Delaying the upgrade may result in limited availability for appointments, especially as the RTS closure date approaches.
In cases where a smart meter is not eligible for installation, your supplier will discuss alternative solutions. If you haven't been contacted by your supplier yet, our experts can assist you in initiating the process. Contact us here.
Final Thoughts
With the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) closing on 30 June 2025, businesses using RTS meters must upgrade to prevent disruptions. If you haven’t heard from your supplier yet, it's essential to contact them promptly to avoid operational issues and ensure a timely upgrade to a smart meter.
